[00:04:27] Listen to this episode before you send out another pitch, because today in today's episode, we are going to be going over the five reasons that your pitches are getting rejected. And what to do about it. Today's episode is going to be a little spicy. It's going to be very, to the point. Maybe it's going to offend some of you.

[00:04:48] I don't know how sensitive you guys are. But I'm speaking the truth and love, I think is always good. And the last thing that I want to do on this podcast is give you. I like a [00:05:00] fluffy feel good. Advice because that's not tangible. That's not something that you can take away. And actually implement into your business.

[00:05:09] And so I'm going to be sharing the five main reasons. That your pitches are potentially getting rejected or maybe ignored. And I want you to also know what to do instead. So I'm going to be sharing that as well. By the way this episode is based on not only my own experience. Of pitching a lot. We do a ton of pitching.

[00:05:29] We've been doing a lot of pitching ever since we started back. It's been almost, it's been nine years since we started this community. And when we were hosting our events, we would pitch so many different collaborative opportunities. And so we have a lot of experience of pitching, but we also know what it feels like to be pitched. And so that's coming from both perspectives.

[00:05:52] And then not only that, but I'm also connected with many other entrepreneurs. And the masterminds have been part of or different [00:06:00] communities and of people that have communities themselves. They have podcasts, they have platforms where people are pitching them all the time as well. And so this is what I gathered from my own experience, but also other people's experiences.

[00:06:15] I know it's going to be an incredibly valuable episode for you. It's going to be supportive when it comes to getting more opportunities and getting more yeses. If you want 20, 24 to be the year of more exposure for you. More opportunities, more clients, more customers. Exploding your income. That's really what I want for you this year.

[00:06:35] Let's make that happen. Welcome to the Business Babes Collective podcast. I'm your host, Danielle Wie. In this podcast, you'll learn tangible business tips and strategies on how to grow successfully and sustainably. We'll also interview seasoned entrepreneurs so you can listen in on their stories and see behind the scenes of what it took to grow and scale their businesses.

[00:06:59] Let's [00:07:00] dive in as we discuss the wild, exciting, crazy, challenging rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship. Before we dive in to the five main reasons your pitches are getting rejected or ignored. I want to also make it clear that rejection is actually a good thing. And this means that you are willing to pitch yourself for opportunities or connect with people that maybe are outside of your comfort zone to connect with.

[00:07:32] If you are not getting any rejections or you're not getting ignored or ghosted, Then it might mean that you're only going for opportunities that feel safe for you, right? You might be actually holding yourself back from growth, even if you are at a point in your business where you've had a lot of. A lot of success and there's opportunities that are coming your way naturally. You still want to be pitching.

[00:07:56] You still want to be out there going for these [00:08:00] bigger opportunities, because if you're only waiting for the opportunities that come to you. Then you're really leaving it up to other people and you're not taking control over the opportunities that are just out there waiting for you. I'm really passionate about this.

[00:08:17] I actually shared this recently on a group coaching call. Inside of action takers club that I get rejected a lot too, because I pitch a lot. Many people don't really realize this, but we're doing collaborations all the time. It's not just something that I talk about and that I coach it's something that we actively do. On a monthly basis, we collaborate with multiple different brands and businesses for our in-person events. We are pitching sponsorships.

[00:08:48] We are working with different vendors for events. There's so much that goes into that. We also do a lot of collaborations when it comes to our virtual events inside of our our action [00:09:00] takers club. We do a lot of collaborations where we bring in guest experts to share and teach on different things or just come in and network with our community.

[00:09:09] So we're doing a lot of collaborations there. Of course, this podcast is an ongoing collaboration because we have guests on our show. I do guest expert sessions on other people's shows that there's just so much. Collaboration all the time. It's if you looked at my calendar, you'd be like, whoa. That's a lot of collaborations, but that doesn't happen just totally organically.

[00:09:33] Some of it does. Yes. There are some things that come to me naturally because they get pitched for things. But that's only because I was intentional about pitching early on. And again, I still do a ton of pitches today, so that all being said, I also get rejected. I also get ignored as well because I'm pitching these big opportunities. [00:10:00] And the cool thing is though, is that I also get a lot of yeses. I get a lot of people wanting to collaborate. I get a lot of people saying, yes. And it's because I've had years and years of practice. And so the reason I want to share that with you is because I want you to know that you too can get really good at pitching.

[00:10:21] You too. Can have a ton of opportunities. Come your way. And also, if you listen to these tips that I'm going to share with you today, and you tune into this podcast on a regular basis, I'm going to be sharing with you. All the things that I've learned. And so you can know that you not only can learn. What to do, but also putting it into practice I think is really important as well. And the other thing is too, is that I don't want you to feel any shame or embarrassment or anything if you've made some of these mistakes, what we're going to talk about today because I've made those mistakes too early on in my journey and in my career.

[00:10:59] So [00:11:00] don't be. I don't know, don't be feeling like, oh my goodness, I'm so embarrassed because I did this or didn't do this or whatever. Just now that you know how to do better. So let's jump in. Number one, Is reason why you might be getting rejected or ignored. Is that you have not yet built. Trust. And the person that you're pitching does not know that you care. And that you care not only about them. But also care about their community.

[00:11:32] That is so important. People that have platforms or people that have built communities. Businesses successful businesses. They're very protective over what they've built. When you are pitching someone, whether it be a person or a brand. They don't know who you are. Unless you have an like connection with them previously, or you've built some sort of relationship with them. You're coming in as someone who's [00:12:00] unknown. And so often it takes some time to build that trust and to build that rapport with someone before they're going to say yes.

[00:12:08] I always recommend. To connect with them wherever you can before you pitch. So this is something that I've talked about in a lot of previous episodes. Is definitely be following them on social media. If you are active on Instagram or social follow them there. And make sure you're actually like engaging with their content. So that they see your name pop up, right?

[00:12:32] Even if they have a really big platform, they will start to notice you, if you're consistent and you connect with them and you are engaging with them, they'll start to see your name pop up and it'll start to become familiar to them. Then when you go to pitch an idea, or when you go to pitch something to them, There'll be more likely to even open that email or to read it or consider it not thing though.

[00:12:56] Definitely say yes, but they're more likely to consider it if [00:13:00] they recognize your brand or your name. If they have some type of a platform, whether it be a blog or a YouTube or a podcast, or even just their email list. Engage with them. There is. As well. Build that relationship. Another thing is if you have any connections or friends in common, Yeah, this could be a really great way where you could even there ask for an introduction if If your contact feels comfortable with that, obviously know, don't overstep where it's like, Hey, it's a personal contact.

[00:13:32] And you're just going to ask out of the blue. If you can introduce them, make sure you actually have a close relationship with that person before you ask that. But see if they would be willing. If you have a close relationship with someone who does have a connection. See if they would be willing to connect you. Either before or after you send a pitch.

[00:13:50] And another thing is that again, people need to know that you care about their community. This is something that really is incredibly important to [00:14:00] me. Is, we've been building this community for nine years. To me, if I'm going to allow someone to be in front of our community, whether it be on the podcast. Part of one of our events or guest speaking or being on one of our platforms. That is. It really, I really need to trust them.

[00:14:23] And I need to know that they not only are an expert or, they're someone who has something of value to share. But also, I need to know that they actually care about my people, because I don't want someone coming on my platform. Who doesn't actually care about the people in my community.

[00:14:40] That's you, if I were to bring someone on the podcast or bring someone onto our social media, whatever that looks like, and they're then not going to take care of my people. That's not something that I want. Give them value and build that relationship first, let them know that you love their community, that you want to serve [00:15:00] their community. And then also another thing is give them value before you even ask for something.

[00:15:06] Following them on social media is a great start. But something like leaving. A review of something. For example, if you've tried their products that they have products. If you tried their products before, give them a review, right? Send them a testimonial. You can review or rate their podcast, maybe share something that they've shared on social media, on your stories and tag them.

[00:15:30] There's lots of different opportunities to support them before you go into the pitch. Number two reason why you might get rejected. A pitch might get rejected is because it's just not a good brand fit, right? I think something that you need to recognize is that. People are not just going to talk about anything on their platform.

[00:15:51] And they're also not going to collaborate with a brand, whether it be. Let's say you're hosting an event or you want to do a social media collaboration or [00:16:00] whatever it might be. It needs to be aligned for them. And needs to make sense for their business to do that collaboration. So I'm going to give it an a quick example.

[00:16:10] Let's say for example, you're in. Holistic nutritionist. And you want to pitch to be on someone's podcast. And talk about nutrition. But maybe they only focus on motherhood and parenting tips. This might not seem like a good fit for them in less. You come up with some ideas around how you can relate it. Specifically to the content they share.

[00:16:34] For example, you can share some topics like, Hey, on your podcast, I could talk about the power of food you know, boosting your child's and unity in a natural way, or, the busy moms survival guide to quick and nutritious meals, right? So something that is specific to their ideal audience and that would relate to them. So [00:17:00] making sure that it makes sense for them to promote you or promote what you have to offer. Also sometimes it's just not going to be a good fit and that's okay. Sometimes we get pitches for our podcast, or even for someone who wants to be a part of our events or do something over social media. And I really want to say yes, but it's just not a good brand fit. And it's not that it's not that it's not a. Topic necessarily that would resonate with our community.

[00:17:30] It's just not the direction that we're going in that season. So sometimes it's not a good brand fit. And sometimes it's just not the right. Brand fit at that time. So that's number two, number three is that there's not enough value in it for the person you are pitching. I don't mean that you or your business isn't valuable.

[00:17:52] That's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that. You need to position what you were pitching so that [00:18:00] people understand the value. That they're going to receive. If they collaborate with you. So it needs to be a win for them. And again, like we talked about before a win for their community as well. And it doesn't just need to be a win, but it needs to be a big win.

[00:18:16] So let's say for example, you want to pitch someone to collaborate with you with something on Instagram. I've seen a lot of collaborations. That have been really successful when it comes to contributing to a bundle, for example. So let's say everyone is contributing a product or a. Service to a bundle and you're selling it basically as like one product, but it's a bundle of products.

[00:18:39] This is a really cool way to get your brand. And get your business in front of new audiences by bundling things together and involving multiple brands in this. If you were to pitch something like that, And it's going to be like cross-promoting you want them to know why it's valuable for them? And so maybe instead of let's [00:19:00] say doing the collaboration, just with that business, maybe you are the one to curate it, but you're also going to pitch 10 other brands.

[00:19:08] There's going to be 10 brands in total, a part of this bundle. Now this is again, just an example. Where they might look at that opportunity and say, okay if I were just to collaborate without one person, maybe that's not a big win for me, but to collaborate with 10 different brands, all in my niche.

[00:19:26] Now that is valuable. So getting in front of 10 new audiences, And so that is something, those are the type of examples that I'm talking about when it comes to making it a big win for them. Now I'll given it another example. So when we host our virtual events, so we obviously host in-person events.

[00:19:47] We also host virtual events and it's a really big way that we can bring tons of value to our community. We can. Create a experience for our attendees, by the way we have one [00:20:00] coming up. So stay tuned. I'm so excited. But what we do is we create a ton of value for the speakers that are a part of that event. Not only are we going to have them come onto our platform. And speak and be exposed to our network. But we're also going to allow them to promote what they have going on through a free resource so that they can build their email list.

[00:20:25] We also offer really generous affiliate. Commissions on anyone who upgrades to a VIP. We do like cash bonuses. We do really fun, like extra promotional bonuses. We do so many incredible, valuable things for them. And so it's like another, like incentive for them to want to say yes. So we do that because we know that the people that we're pitching, the people that we want to have a part of our virtual events are very busy.

[00:20:54] And so we know that they're not going to say yes to something that's just like a ma.[00:21:00] Take it or leave it type of experience. We want it to be like such a fun event for them to be a part of and so valuable for them. So let's relate this to something more like a podcast, right? So if you're pitching to, let's say, be a guest on a podcast. How you can add even more value is let's say, for example, you want to pitch and you don't necessarily have a community. I know that. A lot of people will leverage their own communities to be on podcasts.

[00:21:30] For example, they'll say if I'm a. Guests on this podcast, I would love to also share it with my community. And this is, the numbers of people that I have in my own community. So if you don't currently have much of a following or community of your own. That's okay. Think creatively, like what could you do that could be a value. Do you have a website that you have a blog on that you could actually showcase that episode on your blog and have back links [00:22:00] to their website that is incredibly valuable for them. Maybe you have specific skill sets that you can leverage.

[00:22:06] Like maybe you're really good at. SEO, or maybe you are great at Canva templates or Pinterest or video or whatever. How could you add value to them that maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the podcast episode itself, but say Hey, and also as a thank you for having me on your podcast, I'd love to just create some social media. Assets for you that you can just have and use, get creative with your skillset and figure out how can you add value to that person? Other than just what you have to share with them. Number four. Is, it's not quite unique enough. So many times, the reason why you are a pitch is getting. Either rejected or it's getting ignored. Is because your pitch looks like everyone else's pitch prate. That's just the honest truth. I've talked about this [00:23:00] on the podcast before about we get tons of pitches every single day for people wanting to be on our podcasts for people wanting to collaborate with us. Be speakers at our events or be sponsors or whatever that looks like. When the pitch looks very generic, And you can tell it's like a copy paste pitch that they've basically copied and pasted and just haven't even taken the time to really personalize. It doesn't look good.

[00:23:30] And I think. Another thing that really, I know bothers a lot of content creators. Is that when people are fake about. Enjoying their content. I talked about this on the podcast before, but I haven't really gotten super specific on it. But we can tell. If you're pitching. The podcast or pitching, whatever it is and you say, oh, I've been such a huge fan for such a long time, or I love your [00:24:00] podcast or whatever that is. Normally we can tell if that's genuine or if you're just saying that to every single pitch and you're just basically copying and pasting. If you are pitching to be on a podcast, listen to the podcast.

[00:24:17] I think it's just common courtesy to actually do some research and to. Get to know that person before you go out and pitch. And I said this a lie. To my own community. And we, like I say this a lot on our coaching calls, but then also I think I've said it publicly on the podcast. Is it's so much better. To do less pitches and have them be much more intentional than it is to do a hundred pitches that are generic because. You're not going to get the traction that you want on those super generic pitches.

[00:24:50] Just take the same amount of time that you would take to send her to a hundred pitches. And just do 10, right. And build up that skill [00:25:00] of doing really intentional and really good pitches and build relationships while you're doing it. So I think if you flip the script and just think about, okay. I don't want this to be just about me. I want this to be about that other person.

[00:25:13] Like, how is this pitch coming across when it. When it lands in their inbox and I think re like reverse engineering that, and really looking at it from the perspective of someone who's going to receive that. Is really key because that will help you create way better pitches. The fifth reason. Y your pitch might be getting rejected or maybe ignored is because just simply the timing is off.

[00:25:41] This one really. It has nothing to do about. Nothing to do with you. And it's important to note because you might have the very best, most epic pitch ever. You might have done all of the steps. You might have all the templates you have, like the perfect pitch. And still be [00:26:00] ignored or still be rejected. And it has nothing to do with you or your pitch.

[00:26:03] It's just simply the fact that it's not a good time. And so that's why I think it's so important to do that. Pre-work of building the relationship because what I think is so powerful is when you can. When that pitch, that lands in someone's inbox is just the beginning and the start of our relationship.

[00:26:23] That's building over time. I know I've shared this on the podcast before. But it's worth repeating in case you haven't heard an episode where I've talked about this, but some of the collaborations that we've done in our own business have been years in the making years. And a perfect example of this is one of the speakers that we had at one of our events. It took us three.

[00:26:46] I believe it was three years, maybe even four years. Of me just building that relationship with her. And I would show up to her live videos. I would, I actually ended up purchasing some of her [00:27:00] products online because I thought they were amazing and I wanted to support her. And I really did love her business. I think we had sent her multiple pitches, probably about five pitches. And all of them, she said, no. But left the door open, right? And that's another kind of intuitive thing that you will get way better at the more that you are out there pitching is you'll get really good at reading the responses.

[00:27:26] So you get good at reading. Is this like a totally shut door? Like a no and no forever, or are they leaving the door open to potential future opportunities? And so the door was always open. And so we continued to invite her to speak at one of our events. And finally, we got a yes and she spoke at one of our events and it was. Amazing.

[00:27:46] It was so great. So I wanted to share that because I think in this. World where we just expect things to happen overnight. I want you to have that tenacity. I want you to have that grit. That [00:28:00] allows you to stay in the game that allows you to build authentic connections and relationships in your business, because those will flourish.

[00:28:09] And I think if you're in business, just for that short-term gain or just making quick money. I hate to break it to you, but that's not the way entrepreneurship works. Entrepreneurship is a long game. It's a marathon. It's not a sprint. And it takes intentional building of community in order to have a sustainable business. I see a lot of people, unfortunately see a lot of people online, chasing after these shiny objects chasing after these I'm going to make six figures in six months and I'm going to make, whatever it is like million dollars in, in, in a year.

[00:28:50] And if I'm not making that, then my business isn't successful. Like it's just so much out there is just wild. What we see on online. Business [00:29:00] owners that are successful. Long-term. Have built a solid foundation. They've built a strong community.

[00:29:09] They care about the people that they're serving. They care about their customers, their clients, their community. And they're constantly reinvesting in their business. They're reinvesting in themselves. They are building relationships with collaborative partners where they can cross promote. There's so many things that anyways, I could go on and on about this. But the reason I wanted to share that with you is because I care about you.

[00:29:36] I really care about you. And I want you to know that. Yes, you can be successful in business. In whatever your passions are and whatever your skill sets are. As long as you don't give up. And as long as you stay the course, and I just don't want you to get discouraged because a lot of opportunities take more than just a few months to [00:30:00] cultivate. So there you have it. I'm done with my rant now, but there you have it, the five main reasons why your pitches might be getting rejected or ignored.

[00:30:11] Hopefully you got some ideas from this episode. Hopefully you got value to this episode. And I actually want to invite you to deep dive into this idea of collaborations to grow your business. I know that you might feel stuck right now in your business. Maybe you're feeling like it's not moving fast enough or you feel like you're just, you don't know what the you don't know what your next steps are.

At access to our action-takers club. Or a hundred dollar gift card towards coaching or our programs. By the way, I didn't mention this before. But I know because there's three giveaways and there's going to be three winners. I'm going to choose the number one winner first. And if you win and you would actually rather get the three months of access to signature action takers club, I know a few people ask me this question.

[00:33:34] They're like, I want to enter it, but I'm not quite ready to be on the podcast. But I really want to join action takers club. You can choose action-takers club instead of the feature on the podcast, just letting you know, and then I will choose someone else for the feature. So just so you're aware. All right.
